Il verbo to be (essere) al presente fa I am, you are, he / she / it is, we are, they are, al passato was (I, he, she, it) e were (you, we, they). Negazioni e domande si fanno senza do: I'm not tired, Are you Italian?
I have 25 years, Is raining, Do you are…? In questa guida trovi la coniugazione al presente e al passato, le forme contratte, le negazioni e le domande, there is e there are, tutte le frasi in cui l'italiano usa “avere” o “fare”, gli errori tipici ed esercizi.
To be al presente
| Persona | Forma intera | Contratta | Italiano |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | I am | I'm | io sono |
| you | you are | you're | tu sei |
| he / she / it | he is / she is / it is | he's / she's / it's | lui / lei è, (esso) è |
| we | we are | we're | noi siamo |
| you | you are | you're | voi siete |
| they | they are | they're | loro sono |
Due differenze rispetto all'italiano.
Forma negativa e contratta
| Forma intera | Contratta 1 | Contratta 2 |
|---|---|---|
| I am not | I'm not | – |
| you are not | you aren't | you're not |
| he / she / it is not | he isn't | he's not |
| we are not | we aren't | we're not |
| they are not | they aren't | they're not |
Domande e risposte brevi
| Affermativa | Domanda | Risposte brevi |
|---|---|---|
| You are tired. | Are you tired? | Yes, I am. / No, I'm not. |
| She is Italian. | Is she Italian? | Yes, she is. / No, she isn't. |
| They are at home. | Are they at home? | Yes, they are. / No, they aren't. |
| It is expensive. | Is it expensive? | Yes, it is. / No, it isn't. |
Con le parole interrogative la struttura è la stessa: Where are you from?, How old is she?, What is your name?
To be al passato: was e were
| Persona | Affermativa | Negativa | Domanda |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | was | wasn't | Was I / he…? |
| you / we / they | were | weren't | Were you / they…? |
Was e were traducono sia “ero / era” sia “sono stato / è stato”: I was at home yesterday (ieri ero a casa), It was a great film (è stato un film bellissimo).
Quando l'italiano dice “avere” o “fare” e l'inglese usa to be
Molte frasi che noi costruiamo con avere o fare in inglese vogliono to be + aggettivo.
| Italiano | Inglese | Non dire |
|---|---|---|
| Ho 30 anni. | I'm 30 (years old). | I have 30 years. |
| Ho fame / sete. | I'm hungry / thirsty. | I have hunger. |
| Ho freddo / caldo. | I'm cold / hot. | I have cold. |
| Ho paura. | I'm afraid / scared. | I have fear. |
| Hai ragione / torto. | You're right / wrong. | You have reason. |
| Ho sonno. | I'm sleepy. | I have sleep. |
| Fa freddo. | It's cold. | It makes cold. |
| Piove. | It's raining. | Is raining. |
| Sono le tre. | It's three o'clock. | Are three. |
| Sono in ritardo. | I'm late. | I have delay. |
There is e there are: c'è e ci sono
| Forma | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| There is (there's) + singolare | There's a pharmacy near here. | C'è una farmacia qui vicino. |
| There are + plurale | There are two bedrooms. | Ci sono due camere. |
| Negativa | There isn't any milk. There aren't any chairs. | Non c'è latte. Non ci sono sedie. |
| Domanda | Is there a lift? Are there any shops? | C'è un ascensore? Ci sono negozi? |
| Passato | There was a problem. There were many people. | C'era un problema. C'erano molte persone. |
Non confondere there is con it is: There's a café in the square. It's very nice. (C'è un bar in piazza. È molto carino.) There is presenta qualcosa di nuovo, it si riferisce a qualcosa già nominato. Tutti i tempi, le domande e i casi particolari sono in there is e there are.

| Do you are Italian? | Are you Italian? | Con to be niente do |
| She don't is here. | She isn't here. | Negativa: is not |
| Yes, I'm. | Yes, I am. | Niente contrazione nella risposta breve |
| They was at home. | They were at home. | Were con you, we, they |
| There are a problem. | There is a problem. | There is + singolare |

Domande frequenti sul verbo to be
Come si coniuga il verbo to be al presente?
I am, you are, he / she / it is, we are, you are, they are. Nel parlato si usano quasi sempre le forme contratte: I'm, you're, he's, she's, it's, we're, they're.
Come si fa la forma negativa di to be?
Si aggiunge not dopo il verbo: I am not (I'm not), she is not (she isn't / she's not), they are not (they aren't / they're not). Non serve do: “I don't be” è sbagliato.
Come si fanno le domande con to be?
Si inverte soggetto e verbo: You are tired → Are you tired? She is Italian → Is she Italian? Le risposte brevi ripetono il verbo: Yes, I am. / No, she isn't.
Qual è il passato di to be?
Was per I, he, she, it e were per you, we, they: I was tired, they were at home. Negativa: wasn't, weren't. Domanda: Was she there? Were you happy?
Perché in inglese si dice “I am 30” e non “I have 30 years”?
Perché l'età si esprime con to be: I'm 30 (years old). Lo stesso vale per fame, sete, freddo, caldo, paura e ragione: I'm hungry, I'm cold, You're right.
Che differenza c'è tra there is e it is?
There is / there are significa “c'è / ci sono” e presenta qualcosa: There's a bank near here. It is si riferisce a una cosa già nominata o al tempo: It's near the station. It's cold.
Riepilogo
To be al presente fa am, is, are, al passato was, were; nel parlato si usano le forme contratte. Negazioni e domande si fanno senza do: I'm not, Are you…?
