Domande in inglese – WH questions, domande indirette e question tags

Risposta breve

La formula è (parola interrogativa) + ausiliare + soggetto + verbo: Where do you live?, Is she coming?, What have you done?, Can you help me? L'ausiliare dipende dal tempo (do, does, did, be, have o un modale). Due eccezioni: con to be si inverte e basta (Are you ready?) e quando who / what è il soggetto non serve do (Who called?).

TempoAusiliareEsempio
to beam / is / are, was / wereWhere are you from? Was it expensive?
Present simpledo / doesWhat do you do? Does she like it?
Past simpledidWhen did you arrive?
Present / past continuousam / is / are, was / wereWhat are you doing? Where were you going?
Present perfecthave / hasHave you ever been to London?
Futurowill, am / is / are going toWill you be there? What are you going to do?
Modalican, could, should…Can I help you? Should we wait?

L'ausiliare porta il tempo e la persona, quindi il verbo principale resta base: Does she work?, Did you see it? Tutto su do e does è in do e does, e su to be in verbo to be.

Le parole interrogative (WH words)

IngleseItalianoEsempio
whatche cosa, qualeWhat's your name?
whichquale (tra pochi)Which one do you want?
whochiWho is that man?
whosedi chiWhose phone is this?
wheredoveWhere's the toilet?
whenquandoWhen is your birthday?
whyperchéWhy are you laughing?
howcomeHow are you? How do you spell it?
how much / manyquanto / quantiHow much is it? How many people?
how long / often / far / oldquanto tempo, ogni quanto, quanto lontano, quanti anniHow long does it take? How old are you?
what timea che oraWhat time does it start?
💡
“Com'è?” non è How is it? Per chiedere una descrizione si usa What … like?: What's your new flat like? (com'è il tuo nuovo appartamento?), What's the weather like? How is it? chiede piuttosto come sta andando qualcosa: How's your new job?

What o which?

WhatWhich
Sceltaaperta, tra molte possibilitàtra poche opzioni note
EsempioWhat films do you like?Which film shall we watch, this one or that one?
Con one / of–Which one? Which of these is yours?

Domande sul soggetto: senza do

Domanda sul soggettoDomanda sull'oggetto
Who called you? (chi ti ha chiamato?)Who did you call? (chi hai chiamato?)
What happened?What did you do?
Who lives here?Who do you live with?
Which bus goes to the centre?Which bus do you take?

Quando who, what o which + nome sono il soggetto, non c'è ausiliare e il verbo prende la -s o il passato normalmente: Who wants coffee?, What happened? Dire What did happen? è un errore tipico.

La preposizione alla fine

ItalianoInglese
Di dove sei?Where are you from?
Con chi vivi?Who do you live with?
Di cosa parlate? What are you talking about?
A cosa pensi? What are you thinking about?
Per chi è?Who is it for?

With whom do you live? esiste, ma è molto formale; nel parlato si dice sempre Who do you live with?

Domande indirette di cortesia

DirettaIndiretta (più gentile)
Where is the station?Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open?Do you know what time the museum opens?
Is there a pharmacy near here?Do you know if there's a pharmacy near here?
How much does it cost? Can you tell me how much it costs?

Dopo Could you tell me / Do you know / I wonder l'ordine torna quello della frase affermativa: niente inversione e niente do.

Question tags: vero? no?

FraseTagItaliano
You're Italian,aren't you?Sei italiano, vero?
She doesn't eat meat, does she?Non mangia carne, vero?
They went to Rome, didn't they?Sono andati a Roma, no?
You can swim, can't you?Sai nuotare, vero?
I'm late,aren't I?Sono in ritardo, vero?

Domande frequenti sulle domande in inglese

L'ausiliare dipende dal tempo: do/does/did per present e past simple, be per i continuous e to be, have per il present perfect, oppure il modale: Where do you live? Is she working? Have you eaten? Can you swim?

Quali sono le WH questions?

Le domande che iniziano con una parola interrogativa: what (cosa), which (quale), who (chi), whose (di chi), where (dove), when (quando), why (perché), how (come). Più le combinazioni: how much, how many, how long, how often, what time.

Che differenza c'è tra what e which?

What si usa quando le possibilità sono aperte (What music do you like?), which quando si sceglie tra poche opzioni note (Which colour do you prefer, red or blue?).

Perché “Who lives here?” non ha do?

What happened? Se who è l'oggetto, serve do: Who did you call?

Con una domanda indiretta: Could you tell me where the station is? Do you know what time it is? Dopo l'introduzione l'ordine è quello affermativo, senza inversione.

You're Italian, aren't you? She doesn't smoke, does she? Frase affermativa → tag negativa e viceversa.

La formula è (parola interrogativa) + ausiliare + soggetto + verbo; con to be basta invertire. Quando who / what è il soggetto non serve do (Who called?). La preposizione va alla fine (Where are you from?), “com'è?” è What's it like? e nelle domande indirette di cortesia l'ordine resta affermativo (Could you tell me where it is?). Inizia dall'esercizio 3.
