Senza ausiliare si usa do / does / did (You like it, don't you?). Casi speciali: I'm … aren't I?, Let's … shall we?.
| Frase | Tag | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affermativa | negativa | It's expensive, isn't it? | È caro, vero? |
| Negativa | affermativa | It isn't expensive, is it? | Non è caro, vero? |
Tre passaggi: 1. trova l'ausiliare della frase (is, can, have, will…; se non c'è, usa do / does / did); 2. inverti la polarità; 3. aggiungi il pronome del soggetto, mai il nome: Marco is here, isn't he? Nella tag negativa si usa sempre la forma contratta: isn't it, non is not it.
Question tags con tutti i tempi
| Tempo | Esempio affermativo | Esempio negativo |
|---|---|---|
| to be | You're Italian, aren't you? | She wasn't there, was she? |
| Present simple | You like pizza, don't you? | He doesn't smoke, does he? |
| Past simple | They left early, didn't they? | You didn't call, did you? |
| Continuous | It's raining, isn't it? | You weren't sleeping, were you? |
| Present perfect | You've been to Rome, haven't you? | She hasn't finished, has she? |
| Futuro | You'll come, won't you? | It won't rain, will it? |
| Modali | We can park here, can't we? | You shouldn't eat that, should you? |
| Condizionale | She'd like it, wouldn't she? | You wouldn't do that, would you? |
Il punto difficile per un italiano è il present simple e il past simple, dove l'ausiliare non si vede: You work here, don't you?, She lives in Milan, doesn't she? Le regole di do, does e did sono in do e does.
Casi speciali
| Caso | Tag | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| I am | aren't I? | I'm right, aren't I? |
| Let's | shall we? | Let's have a break, shall we? |
| Imperativo | will you? / won't you? / can you? | Pass me the salt, will you? |
| never, nobody, nothing, hardly | tag affermativa | You never listen, do you? Nobody called, did they? |
| everybody, nobody, someone | pronome they | Everybody's here, aren't they? |
| this / that | pronome it | That was fun, wasn't it? |
| there is / there are | isn't there? / aren't there? | There's a problem, isn't there? |
| have (possesso, britannico) | haven't you? / don't you? | You've got a car, haven't you? You have a car, don't you? |
L'intonazione cambia il significato
| Intonazione | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| Scende ↘ | sei sicuro, chiedi solo conferma | It's a lovely day, isn't it?
You've locked the door, haven't you?
|---|---|---|
| You're coming, aren't you? | Yes, I am. | No, I'm not. |
| You're not coming, are you? | No, I'm not. (non vengo) | Yes, I am! (sì che vengo) |
| She doesn't know, does she? | No, she doesn't. | Yes, she does. |
Yes, I'm not non esiste.
Alternative informali: right?, yeah?
Nel parlato, soprattutto americano, si usano spesso codine invariabili: You're from Rome, right?, See you tomorrow, yeah?, It's cool, huh? Nel Regno Unito si sente anche innit? (da isn't it) nello slang giovanile.
|---|---|---|
| You are Italian, no? | You're Italian, aren't you? | Serve la tag |
| You like coffee, isn't it? | You like coffee, don't you? | Ausiliare giusto |
| Marco is late, isn't Marco? | Marco is late, isn't he? | Pronome |
| I'm late, am not I? | I'm late, aren't I? | Caso speciale |
| She never cooks, doesn't she? | She never cooks, does she? | Never è negativo |
| Let's go, don't we? | Let's go, shall we? | Let's → shall we |

Domande frequenti sulle question tags
It's cold, isn't it? Servono a chiedere conferma o a invitare l'altro a rispondere.
Come si formano le question tags?
Con l'ausiliare della frase e il pronome soggetto, invertendo la polarità: frase affermativa → tag negativa (She's nice, isn't she?), frase negativa → tag affermativa (She isn't here, is she?). Se la frase non ha ausiliare si usa do / does / did.
Qual è la question tag di “I am”?
Aren't I?
Shall we?: Let's go to the beach, shall we? Con gli imperativi si usa will you? o won't you?: Close the door, will you?
You're not coming, are you? – Yes, I am (sì che vengo) / No, I'm not (no, non vengo).
Sì, nel parlato informale, soprattutto americano: You're Italian, right?
Riepilogo
Le question tags si formano con l'ausiliare della frase + pronome, invertendo la polarità: affermativa → tag negativa, negativa → tag affermativa; senza ausiliare si usa do / does / did. Casi speciali: aren't I?, shall we? dopo let's, will you? dopo l'imperativo e tag affermativa dopo never e nobody. Si risponde alla realtà, non alla domanda. Inizia dall'esercizio 4.
