There is (there's) = c'è, con un nome singolare o non numerabile: There's a pharmacy near here. There are = ci sono, con un nome plurale: There are two bedrooms. Domande: Is there…? Are there…?, negazioni: There isn't / There aren't any…. Al passato: there was / there were (c'era / c'erano). Non confonderlo con it is, che si riferisce a qualcosa già nominato.
“C'è un problema”, “ci sono molte persone”, “c'era una volta”: in italiano usiamo queste espressioni di continuo, e in inglese corrispondono a there is e there are. La struttura è facile, ma ci sono alcuni dettagli che tradiscono subito un italiano: It's a bank near here, There is many people, Is there any problems? In questa guida trovi tutte le forme, negazioni e domande, il passato e gli altri tempi, la differenza con it is e i casi particolari, con errori tipici ed esercizi.
There is e there are: le forme
| Forma | Con… | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|---|
| There is / there's | singolare | There's a supermarket on the corner. | C'è un supermercato all'angolo. |
| There is / there's | non numerabile | There's some cheese in the fridge. | C'è del formaggio in frigo. |
| There are | plurale | There are three parks in my town. | Ci sono tre parchi nella mia città. |
| There are | plurale + quantità | There are a lot of tourists. | Ci sono tanti turisti. |
Il verbo concorda con il nome che segue, come in italiano “c'è / ci sono”. Con un elenco si guarda il primo elemento: There's a sofa and two chairs, There are two chairs and a sofa. La contrazione there's è normalissima nel parlato; there're esiste ma si scrive raramente.
Negazioni e domande

| How many / much | How much milk is there? | How many rooms are there? |
Nelle negazioni e nelle domande con i plurali e i non numerabili si usa any; con no il verbo resta affermativo (There's no time, mai There isn't no time). Tutte le regole sono in some, any, no.
