Used to – abitudini passate, be used to e get used to

Come si usa used to per parlare di abitudini e situazioni passate (il nostro “da bambino giocavo”), negazioni e domande con did, la differenza con would e con il simple past, e le due costruzioni che confondono tutti: be used to (essere abituato) e get used to (abituarsi). Con errori tipici ed esercizi.

Risposta breve

Used to + verbo base indica un'abitudine o una situazione passata che oggi non è più vera: I used to play football (da ragazzo giocavo a calcio). Nelle domande e negazioni si scrive use to: Did you use to…?, I didn't use to…. Attenzione a due costruzioni diverse: be used to + -ing = essere abituato (I'm used to working late) e get used to + -ing = abituarsi (I'm getting used to living alone).

Used to è il modo più naturale per tradurre l'imperfetto delle abitudini (“da piccolo andavo”, “una volta vivevo”). Il problema è che esistono altre due espressioni molto simili, be used to e get used to, che significano tutt'altro. In questa guida trovi come usare used to, negazioni e domande, la differenza con would, be used to e get used to, un confronto chiaro tra le tre forme, gli errori tipici ed esercizi.

Used to: abitudini e situazioni passate

UsoEsempioItaliano
Abitudine passataI used to go to the beach every summer.Andavo al mare ogni estate.
Stato passatoShe used to live in Milan.Una volta viveva a Milano.
Cosa che non è più veraI used to smoke, but I stopped.Fumavo, ma ho smesso.
CambiamentoThis shop used to be a cinema.

Negazioni e domande

TipoStrutturaEsempio
Affermativaused to + verboI used to like jazz.
Negativadidn't use to + verboI didn't use to like jazz.
DomandaDid … use to + verbo?Did you use to play an instrument?
Alternativa negativanever used toI never used to eat vegetables.
💡
Use o used? Con did e didn't il passato è già nell'ausiliare, quindi si scrive use to: Did you use to…? È la stessa logica di Did you go? (non “Did you went?”). Nel parlato use to e used to si pronunciano allo stesso modo.

Used to o would?

Used toWould
Azioni ripetute✓ We used to play outside.✓ We would play outside.
Stati (be, live, have, like)✓ I used to live in Rome.✗ I would live in Rome.
StileNeutro, molto comunePiù narrativo, nei ricordi

Nei racconti si usa spesso used to per aprire il ricordo e would per continuarlo: When I was a child, we used to spend summers at my grandma's. We would wake up early and go to the beach.

Be used to e get used to

EspressioneSignificatoEsempio
be used to + nome / -ingessere abituato (stato)I'm used to the noise. I'm used to working at night.
get used to + nome / -ingabituarsi (processo)I'm getting used to driving on the left.
not be used tonon essere abituatoShe isn't used to spicy food.
will get used toci si abitueràDon't worry, you'll get used to it.

Qui to è una preposizione, non parte dell'infinito: per questo dopo be used to e get used to il verbo va in -ing. I'm used to get up early è sbagliato, si dice I'm used to getting up early. Possono essere usati in tutti i tempi: I was used to…, I've got used to…. Gli altri casi di -ing e to sono in gerundio o infinito.

Domande frequenti su used to

Cosa significa used to?

Used to + verbo base indica un'abitudine o una situazione del passato che oggi non è più vera: I used to smoke (fumavo, ora non più). In italiano corrisponde spesso all'imperfetto o a “ero solito”.

Come si fanno le domande e le negazioni con used to?

Con did e use to (senza la d): Did you use to play football? I didn't use to like coffee. Nella forma affermativa invece si scrive used to.

Che differenza c'è tra used to e would?

Entrambi esprimono abitudini passate (Every summer we used to / would go to the sea), ma would non si usa con gli stati: si dice I used to live in Rome, non I would live in Rome.

Cosa significa be used to?

Be used to + nome o verbo in -ing significa “essere abituato a”: I'm used to getting up early (sono abituato ad alzarmi presto). Non indica un'abitudine passata, ma una cosa che per te è normale.

Cosa significa get used to?

Get used to + nome o -ing significa “abituarsi a”, cioè il processo: I'm getting used to the cold (mi sto abituando al freddo). You'll get used to it (ti ci abituerai).

Si dice “I use to” al presente?

No. Used to esiste solo al passato. Per un'abitudine presente si usa il present simple con un avverbio: I usually get up at 7 (di solito mi alzo alle 7).

Used to + verbo base indica abitudini e situazioni passate che oggi non sono più vere e traduce bene l'imperfetto delle abitudini; nelle domande e negazioni si scrive use to. Be used to + -ing significa essere abituato, get used to + -ing abituarsi. Would funziona per le azioni ripetute, non per gli stati. Inizia dall'esercizio 2.
