| Affermativa | Negativa | Interrogativa |
|---|---|---|
| I was working | I wasn't working | Was I working? |
| you were working | you weren't working | Were you working? |
| he / she / it was working | he wasn't working | Was he working? |
| we were working | we weren't working | Were we working? |
| they were working | they weren't working | Were they working? |
| Uso | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| Azione in corso in un momento preciso | At 9 pm I was watching TV. | Alle 21 guardavo la TV. |
| Azione interrotta | I was having a shower when you called. | Stavo facendo la doccia quando hai chiamato. |
| Azioni contemporanee | While I was cooking, he was setting the table. | Mentre io cucinavo, lui apparecchiava. |
| Sfondo di un racconto | It was raining and people were running home. | Pioveva e la gente correva a casa. |
When e while
| Struttura | Esempio |
|---|---|
| past continuous + when + simple past | I was walking home when I saw Anna. |
| while + past continuous, simple past | While I was walking home, I saw Anna. |
| while + past continuous, past continuous | While she was studying, I was working. |
| when + simple past, simple past (sequenza) | When I saw her, I stopped. |
Past continuous o simple past?
| Simple past | Past continuous |
|---|---|
| Azione completa: I read a book yesterday. | Azione in corso: I was reading at 10. |
| Sequenza: I got up, had breakfast and left. | Sfondo: The sun was shining… |
| When she arrived, I cooked dinner. (dopo che è arrivata) | When she arrived, I was cooking dinner. (stavo già cucinando) |
L'ultimo esempio mostra bene la differenza: cambiando tempo cambia l'ordine delle azioni. Tutto sul simple past è in simple past.
Come tradurre l'imperfetto italiano
| Imperfetto | Inglese | Tempo |
|---|---|---|
| Leggevo quando è arrivato. | I was reading when he arrived. | Past continuous (azione in corso) |
| Da bambino nuotavo ogni estate. | As a child I used to swim every summer. | Used to (abitudine) |
| La stanza era piccola. | The room was small. | Simple past (descrizione) |
| Lo conoscevo bene. | I knew him well.
|---|---|---|
| I was knowing him. | I knew him. | Verbo di stato |
| We was playing. | We were playing. | were con we |
| When I was arriving, she left. | When I arrived, she was leaving / had left. | Azione breve → simple past |

Domande frequenti sul past continuous
Come si forma il past continuous?
Con was / were + verbo in -ing: I was working, they were sleeping. Was si usa con I, he, she, it; were con you, we, they. Negativa: I wasn't working. Domanda: Were you working?
Quando si usa il past continuous?
Per un'azione in corso in un momento preciso del passato (At 8 I was having dinner), per un'azione interrotta da un'altra (I was cooking when the phone rang), per due azioni contemporanee (While I was reading, she was cooking) e per descrivere lo sfondo di un racconto.
Che differenza c'è tra when e while?
While si usa di solito con l'azione lunga al past continuous (While I was walking…), when con l'azione breve al simple past (…when I saw her). Si può dire anche: I was walking when I saw her.
Il past continuous corrisponde all'imperfetto?
A volte: “stavo leggendo” o “leggevo (in quel momento)” è I was reading.
Si mette was / were prima del soggetto: Were you sleeping? What were you doing at 10? Risposte brevi: Yes, I was. No, they weren't.
Riepilogo
Il past continuous (was / were + -ing) indica un'azione in corso nel passato, spesso interrotta da un'azione breve al simple past (I was cooking when…), azioni contemporanee con while e lo sfondo di un racconto. Non traduce sempre l'imperfetto: per le abitudini serve used to, per le descrizioni il simple past. Inizia dall'esercizio 2.
