Pronomi relativi in inglese – who, which, that, whose e where

Risposta breve

Un italiano tende a dire the man which, the thing that what o a mettere la preposizione all'inizio (the person with who I work). In questa guida trovi who, which e that, whose, where e when, quando omettere il pronome, le relative con le virgole, la preposizione alla fine e come tradurre “ciò che” e “il che”, con errori tipici ed esercizi.

Who, which, that

PronomePer…EsempioItaliano
whopersoneThe woman who lives upstairs is a doctor.
whichcose, animaliThe bus which goes to the centre is the 64.L'autobus che va in centro è il 64.
thatpersone e cose (senza virgole)The man that called / The book that I boughtL'uomo che ha chiamato / Il libro che ho comprato
whompersone, oggetto (formale)The person to whom I spoke…La persona con cui ho parlato…

Nel parlato that è la scelta più frequente per le cose, mentre per le persone si usano sia who sia that. Whom esiste ma è molto formale: nel parlato si dice the person I spoke to.

Whose, where e when

PronomeSignificatoEsempio
whoseil cui, la cui, i cuiThat's the girl whose brother plays for Juventus.
wheredove, in cui (luogo)This is the hotel where we stayed.
whenquando, in cui (tempo)I remember the day when we met.
whyper cuiThat's the reason why I left.
💡
Whose non è who's.Whose indica possesso (the man whose car…), who's è la contrazione di who is o who has (Who's calling?).

Esempio
soggetto (seguito da un verbo)NoThe man who lives next door is French.
oggetto (seguito da un soggetto)SìThe man (who) I met yesterday is French.
oggetto con preposizione alla fineSìThe girl (that) I was talking to…

Il trucco: se subito dopo il pronome c'è un soggetto (I, you, she, my friend…), puoi toglierlo. Nel parlato quasi sempre lo si toglie: Is this the book you wanted?

Senza virgole (defining)Con virgole (non-defining)
EsempioThe students who passed got a certificate. My sister, who lives in Turin, is a nurse.
That?✓ sì✗ no (solo who / which)
Omissione?✓ se oggetto✗ mai

Le virgole cambiano il significato: My brother who lives in London (il fratello che vive a Londra, quindi ne ho altri) e My brother, who lives in London, (ho un solo fratello, e tra l'altro vive a Londra).

La preposizione alla fine

ItalianoInglese parlatoInglese formale
la persona con cui lavorothe person I work withthe person with whom I work
la città da cui vengothe town I come fromthe town from which I come
il film di cui ti ho parlatothe film I told you aboutthe film about which I told you

Come nelle domande (Who do you work with?, vedi domande in inglese), nel parlato la preposizione va alla fine e il pronome sparisce. Mai with who o with that: se la preposizione va prima, serve whom o which.

Domande frequenti sui pronomi relativi

Che differenza c'è tra who, which e that?

Who si usa per le persone (the man who called), which per le cose e gli animali (the book which I read), that per entrambi nelle relative senza virgole (the man that called, the book that I read). That è il più comune nel parlato.

Quando si può omettere il pronome relativo?

Quando è l'oggetto della relativa: The film (that) we saw was great.

Non si dice “that what” né “which”: I don't understand what you mean.

Inizia dall'esercizio 3.
