Periodo ipotetico in inglese – zero, primo, secondo e terzo tipo

Risposta breve

Zero: if + present, present (If you heat ice, it melts). First: if + present, will (If it rains, I'll stay home). Second: if + past, would (If I had more time, I'd travel). Third: if + past perfect, would have + participio (If I had known, I would have come).

I quattro tipi a confronto

TipoFrase con ifFrase principaleEsempioItaliano
Zeropresent simplepresent simpleIf you mix red and blue, you get purple.Se mescoli rosso e blu, ottieni viola.
Firstpresent simplewill + verboIf you study, you'll pass.Se studi / studierai, sarai promosso.
Secondpast simplewould + verboIf I were rich, I'd buy a boat.Se fossi ricco, comprerei una barca.
Thirdpast perfectwould have + participioIf you had called, I'd have come.Se avessi chiamato, sarei venuto.

Zero conditional: le verità generali

Si usa per fatti sempre veri, regole e abitudini: If you don't water plants, they die, If I drink coffee after 6, I can't sleep. Qui if significa quasi “quando”, e infatti si può sostituire con when. Entrambe le frasi sono al present simple.

First conditional: situazioni possibili

ItalianoIngleseNon dire
Se pioverà, resterò a casa.If it rains, I'll stay at home.If it will rain…
Se hai tempo, chiamami. If you have time, call me.–
Se non ti sbrighi, perderai il treno. If you don't hurry, you'll miss the train. If you won't hurry…
Quando arriverò, ti scriverò.When I arrive, I'll text you.When I will arrive…
💡
Niente will dopo if, when, as soon as, before, after, until. In italiano usiamo il futuro (“quando arriverò”), in inglese il present simple: as soon as I get home, before you leave. Will va solo nella frase principale. Altri usi di will sono in futuro in inglese.

Second conditional: situazioni immaginarie

UsoEsempioItaliano
Ipotesi irrealeIf I lived by the sea, I'd swim every day.Se abitassi al mare, nuoterei ogni giorno.
ConsiglioIf I were you, I'd accept.Se fossi in te, accetterei.
Con could / mightIf we left now, we could catch the train.Se partissimo ora, potremmo prendere il treno.
DomandaWhat would you do if you won the lottery?Cosa faresti se vincessi alla lotteria?

Con to be si usa were per tutte le persone, soprattutto nello scritto e nell'espressione fissa If I were you.

Serve il past perfect dopo if.

FormaEsempio
AffermativaIf she had studied, she would have passed.
NegativaIf it hadn't rained, we would have gone to the beach.
DomandaWhat would you have done if you had lost your passport?
Contratta (parlato)If I'd known, I'd have told you.

In If I'd known, I'd have told you il primo è had, il secondo would.

Periodi misti

TipoEsempioItaliano
Passato → presenteIf I had taken the job, I would live in London now.
Presente → passatoIf I spoke French, I would have understood him.Se parlassi francese, l'avrei capito.

Unless, as long as, in case e le altre

CongiunzioneSignificatoEsempio
unlessa meno che non (= if not)We'll go unless it rains.

in casenel caso in cui (per precauzione)Take an umbrella in case it rains.
otherwisealtrimentiHurry up, otherwise we'll be late.
suppose / imaginesupponiamo, immaginaSuppose you lost your job, what would you do?

Dopo unless il verbo è affermativo: unless you hurry, non unless you don't hurry.

Quattro: zero conditional (verità generali: If you heat ice, it melts), first (situazioni possibili nel futuro: If it rains, I'll stay home), second (situazioni immaginarie: If I won, I'd buy a house) e third (il passato che non si può cambiare: If I had known, I would have come).

Si usa will dopo if?

No. Nella frase con if si usa il present simple anche se si parla del futuro: If it rains tomorrow, not “if it will rain”.

Si dice “if I was” o “if I were”?

Entrambe sono usate. If I were è la forma più corretta e si usa sempre nell'espressione If I were you (se fossi in te). If I was è comune nel parlato informale.

Come si traduce “se avessi saputo”?

Con il third conditional: If I had known, I would have told you (se l'avessi saputo, te l'avrei detto). If + past perfect, would have + participio.

Cosa significa unless?

Unless significa “a meno che non”, cioè if … not: I'll go unless it rains = I'll go if it doesn't rain. Dopo unless il verbo è affermativo.

Si può invertire l'ordine delle frasi?

Sì: If it rains, I'll stay home = I'll stay home if it rains. Quando if è all'inizio si mette di solito la virgola, quando è a metà no.

Zero: if + present, present. First: if + present, will. Second: if + past, would (If I were you). Third: if + past perfect, would have + participio. Dopo if, when, as soon as non si usa mai will né would. Unless = if not, con verbo affermativo; in case = per precauzione. Inizia dall'esercizio 5.
