| Affermativa | Negativa | Interrogativa |
|---|---|---|
| I had (I'd) finished | I hadn't finished | Had I finished? |
| you had finished | you hadn't finished | Had you finished? |
| he / she / it had finished | he hadn't finished | Had he finished? |
| we / they had finished | we hadn't finished | Had they finished? |
Had è uguale per tutte le persone. Per i verbi irregolari serve il participio (terza colonna): go – went – gone, see – saw – seen.
| Prima (past perfect) | Dopo (simple past) | Frase |
|---|---|---|
| il film inizia | arrivo | When I arrived, the film had already started. |
| lei esce | chiamo | I called her, but she had gone out. |
| non vedo mai il mare | vado a Rimini | I had never seen the sea before I went to Rimini. |
| perdo le chiavi | non posso entrare | I couldn't get in because I had lost my keys. |
Past perfect e trapassato prossimo
| Italiano | Inglese |
|---|---|
| Avevo già mangiato. | I had already eaten. |
| Non ero mai stato a Londra prima. | I had never been to London before. |
| Quando siamo arrivati, la festa era finita. | When we arrived, the party had finished. |
| Dopo che aveva cenato, è uscito. | After he had had dinner, he went out. / After he had dinner, he went out. |
Con after e before l'ordine è già chiaro, quindi l'inglese parlato usa spesso il simple past.
| Parola | Esempio |
|---|---|
| already | The train had already left. |
| just | She had just gone to bed when I called. |
| never … before | I had never tried sushi before. |
| by the time | By the time we got there, the shop had closed. |
| before / after | I had finished my work before he arrived. |
| because | She was tired because she hadn't slept. |
Past perfect nel periodo ipotetico e nel discorso indiretto
| Costruzione | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| Terzo condizionale | If I had known, I would have told you. |
| Wish / if only | I wish I had studied more. | Vorrei aver studiato di più. |
| Discorso indiretto | She said she had seen him. | Ha detto che l'aveva visto. |
|---|---|---|
| When I arrived, the film already started. | …the film had already started. | Azione precedente |
| I was gone home. | I had gone home. | Sempre had, mai was |
| If I would have known… | If I had known… | Niente would dopo if |
| I had saw him before. | I had seen him before.

Forma contratta: I'd finished. Negativa: I hadn't finished. Domanda: Had you finished?
I'd finished è past perfect (had finished), I'd finish è condizionale (would finish).
Nel terzo condizionale (If I had known, I would have told you), con wish per i rimpianti (I wish I had studied more) e nel discorso indiretto (She said she had seen him).
Riepilogo
Si usa con already, just, never before e by the time, nel terzo condizionale, con wish e nel discorso indiretto. Con after e before spesso basta il simple past. Inizia dall'esercizio 2.
