I phrasal verbs sono verbo + particella (up, out, off, on, down…) con un significato proprio: give up = smettere, find out = scoprire, look after = prendersi cura. Con quelli separabili il pronome va in mezzo: turn it off, mai turn off it. I più utili per iniziare: get up, look for, find out, give up, turn on / off, pick up, go on, put off.
| Verbo | Phrasal verb | Significato | Sinonimo “latino” |
|---|---|---|---|
| give (dare) | give up | smettere, arrendersi | abandon, quit |
| find (trovare) | find out | scoprire, venire a sapere | discover |
| put (mettere) | put off | rimandare | postpone |
| go (andare) | go on | continuare | continue |
| look (guardare) | look into | indagare, esaminare | investigate |

Domande frequenti sui phrasal verbs
Senza phrasal verbs è difficile capire film, serie e conversazioni.
Sempre tra il verbo e la particella: turn it off, pick her up, give them back. Con un nome si può scegliere: turn off the TV o turn the TV off. “Turn off it” è sbagliato.
In generale sono separabili quelli con un oggetto e una particella “avverbiale” (turn off, pick up, put on), inseparabili quelli con una preposizione (look after, get over, look for).
Quanti phrasal verbs devo sapere?
Alcune particelle hanno significati ricorrenti (up = completamente, off = separazione), che aiutano a indovinare.
Riepilogo
I phrasal verbs sono verbo + particella con un significato proprio (give up, find out, put off). Con quelli separabili il pronome va in mezzo (turn it off), con quelli inseparabili dopo (look for it). Le particelle hanno idee ricorrenti (up = completamente, off = separazione). Inizia dall'esercizio 3.
