Much, many, a lot of – differenze, regole ed esercizi

“Molto” in inglese si dice in tre modi: much, many e a lot of. Much con i non numerabili, many con i plurali, a lot of con entrambi. Ma c'è un dettaglio che i libri spesso dimenticano: nelle frasi affermative much e many suonano formali. Ecco quando usare ciascuno, how much e how many, too much, so many, a few e a little. Con errori tipici ed esercizi.

Risposta breve

Much si usa con i nomi non numerabili (much time), many con i plurali (many friends), a lot of con entrambi (a lot of time, a lot of friends). Nel parlato much e many si usano soprattutto in domande e negazioni (How much? I don't have many friends), mentre nelle frasi affermative si preferisce a lot of: I have a lot of work.

In italiano “molto” si adatta: molto tempo, molti amici, molta gente. In inglese la scelta dipende da un'altra cosa: se il nome è numerabile o no. E c'è una seconda regola, più sottile, sul tipo di frase. In questa guida trovi la differenza tra much, many e a lot of, cosa usare nelle frasi affermative, how much e how many, too much e so many, a few e a little e come dire “molto” con aggettivi e verbi, con errori tipici ed esercizi.

Much, many, a lot of: la differenza

Con i pluraliCon i non numerabili
many✓ many books, many people✗
much✗✓ much time, much money
a lot of / lots of✓ a lot of books✓ a lot of time

Il passo decisivo è capire se il nome è numerabile. People è plurale (quindi many people), mentre money, time, work, information, advice sono non numerabili (quindi much). La lista completa delle trappole è in nomi numerabili e non numerabili. Lots of è identico a a lot of, solo un po' più informale.

Nelle frasi affermative: meglio a lot of

FraseNaturaleFormale / raro nel parlato
AffermativaI have a lot of friends. I drink a lot of coffee.I have many friends. I drink much coffee.
NegativaI don't have many friends. I don't drink much coffee.(anche a lot of è corretto)
DomandaDo you have many friends? Do you drink much coffee?(anche a lot of è corretto)
💡
Regola pratica: nelle frasi affermative usa a lot of; nelle domande e nelle negazioni usa much o many. Many nelle affermative è comunque accettabile (Many people think…), mentre much nelle affermative suona davvero strano: I have much work si sente subito come un errore.

How much e how many

DomandaUsoItaliano
How many brothers do you have?pluraliQuanti fratelli hai?
How many people were there?pluraliQuante persone c'erano?
How much time do we have?non numerabiliQuanto tempo abbiamo?
How much is it? / How much does it cost?prezzoQuanto costa?
How much sugar do you take?non numerabiliQuanto zucchero prendi?

Too much, so many, as much as

EspressioneEsempioItaliano
too much / too manyThere's too much traffic. There are too many cars.troppo traffico, troppe macchine
so much / so manyI have so much to do! So many people came!ho così tanto da fare, così tante persone
as much / as many asEat as much as you want.mangia quanto vuoi
not much / not many– Any questions? – Not many.non molte

Dopo too, so e as, much e many sono perfettamente naturali anche nelle frasi affermative: I ate too much è inglese normalissimo.

A few, a little, few, little

PluraliNon numerabiliSignificato
Positivoa few friendsa little moneyalcuni, un po' (abbastanza)
Negativofew friendslittle moneypochi, poco (non abbastanza)

La differenza è tutta nell'articolo: I have a few friends in Rome (ho qualche amico a Roma, bene) contro I have few friends in Rome (ho pochi amici a Roma, peccato). Nel parlato few e little da soli sono un po' formali: si dice più spesso not many e not much.

un comparativomuch / a lotmuch better, a lot cheaper
un verboa lot / very muchI like it a lot. I enjoyed it very much.

Attenzione alla posizione: I like football very much, non I like very much football. In inglese very much va dopo l'oggetto, mai tra il verbo e l'oggetto.

Domande frequenti su much, many e a lot of

Qual è la differenza tra much e many?

Much si usa con i nomi non numerabili (much time, much money), many con i nomi plurali numerabili (many friends, many books). Entrambi significano “molto / molti”.

Quando si usa a lot of?

Con tutti i nomi, numerabili e non: a lot of time, a lot of people. È la forma più naturale nelle frasi affermative del parlato: I have a lot of work è più comune di I have much work.

Si può usare much nelle frasi affermative?

È possibile ma suona formale. Nel parlato much e many si usano soprattutto nelle domande e nelle negazioni (How much? I don't have much time) e dopo too, so, as: too much, so many.

Come si dice “molto” con un aggettivo?

Con very: very good, very tired. Much si usa con i comparativi: much better, much bigger. Con un verbo si usa a lot: I like it a lot, oppure very much: Thank you very much.

Che differenza c'è tra a few e few?

A few significa “alcuni” (positivo): I have a few friends here. Few significa “pochi” (negativo): Few people came. Lo stesso per a little (un po') e little (poco).

Si dice “how much people” o “how many people”?

How many people, perché people è il plurale di person ed è numerabile. How much si usa con i non numerabili e per chiedere il prezzo: How much is it?

Many con i plurali, much con i non numerabili, a lot of con tutti. Nelle frasi affermative si preferisce a lot of, in domande e negazioni much e many; dopo too, so e as vanno bene sempre. How many per contare, how much per quantità e prezzi. Con gli aggettivi “molto” è very, con i verbi a lot. Inizia dall'esercizio 4.
