Aggettivi corti (una sillaba): -er e the -est (cheap, cheaper, the cheapest). Aggettivi lunghi: more e the most (expensive, more expensive, the most expensive). Aggettivi in -y: happier, the happiest. Irregolari: good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst. Il secondo termine si introduce con than: Rome is bigger than Florence.
Aggettivi corti e lunghi: -er o more?
| Tipo di aggettivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| 1 sillaba: tall, cheap, old | taller, cheaper, older | the tallest, the cheapest, the oldest |
| 2 sillabe in -y: happy, easy, busy | happier, easier, busier | the happiest, the easiest, the busiest |
| 2 sillabe (altre): modern, careful, boring | more modern, more careful | the most modern, the most careful |
| 3+ sillabe: expensive, interesting, beautiful | more expensive, more interesting | the most expensive, the most interesting |
Alcuni aggettivi di due sillabe accettano entrambe le forme: quieter / more quiet, simpler / more simple, cleverer / more clever.
| Regola | Esempi |
|---|---|
| Finisce in -e: + -r / -st | nice → nicer → the nicest, large → larger |
| Consonante + vocale + consonante: raddoppia | big → bigger, hot → hotter, thin → thinner |
| Consonante + y: y → -ier / -iest | easy → easier, funny → the funniest |
| Finisce in -w, -x, -y dopo vocale: non raddoppia | new → newer, low → lower, grey → greyer |
Aggettivi irregolari
| Aggettivo | Comparativo | Superlativo | Italiano |
|---|---|---|---|
| good | better | the best | buono, migliore, il migliore |
| bad | worse | the worst | cattivo, peggiore, il peggiore |
| far | further / farther | the furthest / farthest | lontano, più lontano |
| little (quantità) | less | the least | poco, meno, il meno |
| much / many | more | the most | molto, di più, il più |
| old (famiglia) | elder (anche older) | the eldest | maggiore (fratello) |
Elder e eldest si usano solo per i membri della famiglia e prima del nome: my elder sister, their eldest son. Per tutto il resto si usa older: She's older than me.
Than, in e of
| Dopo… | Si usa | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|---|
| un comparativo | than | Milan is bigger than Turin. | più grande di Torino |
| un superlativo + luogo / gruppo | in | the tallest building in Europe, the best student in the class | il più alto d'Europa, il migliore della classe |
| un superlativo + periodo / numero | of | the best day of my life, the cheapest of the three | il giorno più bello della mia vita |
As … as e less: uguaglianza e minoranza
| Struttura | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| as + agg. + as | Paolo is as tall as Luca. | Paolo è alto quanto Luca. |
| not as / so + agg. + as | The film isn't as good as the book. |
| less + agg. + than | This hotel is less expensive than the other. | Questo hotel è meno caro dell'altro. |
| the least + agg. | It's the least interesting part. | È la parte meno interessante. |
| the same as | My phone is the same as yours. | Il mio telefono è uguale al tuo. |
Nel parlato less … than si usa poco con gli aggettivi corti: invece di less tall than si dice not as tall as o si usa il contrario, shorter than.
Much better, the best ever e altre espressioni
| Espressione | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| much / a lot / far + comparativo | It's much better now. | Ora va molto meglio. |
| a bit / slightly + comparativo | It's a bit cheaper. | È un po' più economico. |
| comparativo + and + comparativo | It's getting hotter and hotter. | Fa sempre più caldo. |

| superlativo + ever / I've ever… | It's the best pizza I've ever eaten. |
Con il comparativo “molto” è much, non very: much bigger, mai very bigger. Gli altri usi di much sono in much, many, a lot of.

Poi than: She's taller than me.
Come si forma il superlativo?
Con the + -est per gli aggettivi corti (the tallest) e the most per quelli lunghi (the most expensive). Dopo il superlativo si usa in per i luoghi e i gruppi (the best in Italy) e of per i periodi e i numeri (the best day of my life).
Quali sono i comparativi irregolari?
good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst, far → further / farther → the furthest, little → less → the least, much / many → more → the most.
Come si fa il comparativo di uguaglianza?
Con as + aggettivo + as: She's as tall as her brother (alta quanto suo fratello). Negativo: not as … as, che è il modo più naturale di dire “meno … di”: It's not as expensive as I thought.
Si dice “than me” o “than I”?
Nel parlato si dice than me: She's older than me. Than I am è corretto e più formale. Than I da solo suona antiquato.
Come si dice “sempre più”?
Ripetendo il comparativo: It's getting colder and colder (fa sempre più freddo), more and more expensive (sempre più caro).
Riepilogo
Aggettivi corti: -er / the -est; aggettivi lunghi: more / the most; in -y: -ier / the -iest. Irregolari: better, worse, further. Dopo il comparativo than, dopo il superlativo in per luoghi e gruppi e of per periodi. Uguaglianza con as … as, rafforzativo con much, mai very. Inizia dall'esercizio 3.
