La forma passiva si forma con be + participio passato: The bridge was built in 1990. Il tempo lo porta be (is made, was made, has been made, will be made).
| Attiva | Passiva | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa. | The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo. | La Gioconda fu dipinta da Leonardo. |
| They make these shoes in Italy. | These shoes are made in Italy. | Queste scarpe sono fatte in Italia. |
| Someone has stolen my bike. | My bike has been stolen. | Mi hanno rubato la bici. |

Domande e negazioni si fanno con be, senza do: Was it made in China?, The email wasn't sent, Has the problem been solved?
Quando si usa il passivo
| Caso | Esempio |
|---|---|
| Chi agisce è sconosciuto | My wallet was stolen on the train. |
| Chi agisce è ovvio | He was arrested. (dalla polizia) |
| L'interesse è sull'oggetto | This church was built in the 12th century. |
| Testi formali e istruzioni | Applications must be submitted by 30 June. |
| Per non accusare nessuno | Mistakes were made. |
Il “si” impersonale italiano in inglese
Il “si” impersonale e passivante non ha un equivalente diretto in inglese. Le soluzioni sono tre: il passivo, you o people / they con valore generico.
| Italiano | Inglese |
|---|---|
| Qui si parla inglese. | English is spoken here. |
| Affittasi appartamento. / Si affitta. | Flat to let / for rent. |
| Come si dice “finestra” in inglese? | How do you say “finestra” in English? |
| In Italia si mangia bene. | You eat well in Italy. / People eat well in Italy. |
| Si dice che sia ricchissimo. | He is said to be very rich. / It is said that he's very rich. |
| Si pensa che… | It is thought that… / People think that… |
| Non si fuma qui. | Smoking is not allowed here. / You can't smoke here. |
I was given: il passivo con due complementi
Con verbi come give, send, offer, show, tell, teach la persona può diventare soggetto del passivo, cosa impossibile in italiano: I was given a present (mi è stato dato un regalo), She was offered a job (le è stato offerto un lavoro), We were told to wait (ci è stato detto di aspettare). È la forma più naturale in inglese: A job was offered to her è corretto ma suona pesante.
Have something done e get: farsi fare
| Struttura | Esempio | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| have + oggetto + participio | I had my hair cut yesterday. | Ieri mi sono fatto tagliare i capelli. |
| We're having the house painted. | Ci stiamo facendo imbiancare la casa. | |
| get + oggetto + participio (informale) | I need to get my car repaired. | Devo far riparare la macchina. |
| get + participio (passivo informale) | He got fired. My phone got broken. | È stato licenziato. Mi si è rotto il telefono. |
Attenzione all'ordine: I had my hair cut (me li ha tagliati il parrucchiere) è diverso da I cut my hair (me li sono tagliati da solo).

Domande frequenti sulla forma passiva
Come si forma il passivo in inglese?
Con il verbo be al tempo giusto + participio passato: The house was built in 1900 (la casa fu costruita nel 1900). Il tempo lo porta be: is built, was built, has been built, will be built.
Quando si usa la forma passiva?
Quando non è importante, non si sa o è ovvio chi fa l'azione (My bike was stolen), quando l'interesse è sull'oggetto (The Colosseum was built by the Romans) e nei testi formali, scientifici e giornalistici.
Come si traduce il “si” impersonale in inglese?
Spesso con il passivo: “si vende” → is sold / for sale, “qui si parla inglese” → English is spoken here, “si dice che” → it is said that. Oppure con you, people o they: “in Italia si mangia bene” → you eat well in Italy.
Quando si usa by nel passivo?
Solo quando è importante dire chi ha fatto l'azione: The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo. Se chi agisce è ovvio o sconosciuto, si omette: The thief was arrested (dalla polizia, ovviamente).
Cosa significa have something done?
Significa far fare qualcosa a qualcun altro: I had my hair cut (mi sono fatto tagliare i capelli), We're having the kitchen painted. In italiano usiamo “farsi fare”.
Si può usare get al posto di be?
Sì, nel parlato informale, soprattutto per eventi improvvisi o negativi: He got fired (è stato licenziato), My car got stolen. Get married, get dressed e get lost sono espressioni fisse.
